Get to know Asia Modern

The main structure of the Asia Museum of Modern Art at Asia University has been constructed from bare concrete structural components, faced with curtain walls. The interior covers an area of 4,111 square meters and the surrounding grounds measure about 19,840 square meters.
Designed by the world-famous Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the equilateral triangle has been adopted as the basic constructional element and skillfully incorporated in a repeated motif to form the three stories of the equilateral triangle-shaped building. An atrium space is created with a crisscrossing arrangement of concrete beams and outdoor terraces contain sculpture displays.
While the ground floor contains a café, shop and lecture hall, the first and second floors both contain art galleries, with one floor being the reverse mirror image of the other.
On the first floor the perimeter hallways are wide enough to be used for the display of artworks on moveable walls, while on the top floor much narrower hallways circumvent a set of inner galleries. Thus, the galleries on the lower floor have a lot of daylight from one side, the upper floor galleries have to depend on electric light for illumination.

History of Asia Modern

On May 4, 2007, Asia University founder Tsai Changhai presented the project plan and officially invited Mr. Tadao Ando to design an art museum for Asia University. Aware of the general scarcity of resources on school campuses in Taiwan and the relatively few chances for students to have contact with art works, Mr. Tsai hoped to influence students through the environment and give them the opportunity to accumulate aesthetic experiences to cultivate their characters. Therefore, the main purpose in inviting Tadao Ando to design the museum was to educate students and create the opportunity for them to have contact with art works from masters of international status.

During a press conference held in Taipei in early 2008, Mr. Ando presented his concept for the triangular museum design to achieve a balance between the environment, architecture and people. He also attended an on-campus seminar with the teachers and students of Asia University and led them to inspect the base. On Dec. 22, 2008, the museum was selected among the “2008 Top Ten Visual Art News Topics in Taiwan”. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Jan. 24, 2011 and the museum was inaugurated on Oct. 24, 2013. Vice President Liu Yutung of Asia University was appointed the director.

In Sep. 2013, the museum was officially named Asia Museum of Modern Art, Asia University.
